3 Steps To Follow When Your Lights Flicker

Blog

Flickering lights can be a tough problem to deal with because it's hard to pinpoint the source of the problem without some investigation. There are numerous reasons why a particular light flickers, so you can try to get to the bottom of the problem with a few steps. Keep in mind that if the problem is related to wires and electrical faults, then all repairs must be dealt with by a professional electrician.

1. Turn Off All Electrical Appliances Around The Light

Sometimes lights may start to flicker because a certain appliance like a washing machine, a dishwasher or an air conditioner has been turned on and pulls all electricity in the circuit towards it. This reduces electricity flow to other areas, which is why your lights may flicker temporarily. The best way to detect whether the appliances are causing lights to flicker is to turn them all off and leave only the isolated light on.

If the light stops flickering, then you know it's because of an energy surge. If this happens every time you turn on the appliance, then you may have to add another circuit in your home for these larger machines. If the light continues to flicker even when the appliance is turned off, then something else is wrong.

2. Check The Condition Of The Light Bulb

Sometimes the problem may simply be because of a poorly functioning or old light bulb that is about to give way completely. The best way to check whether this is an issue is by replacing the light bulb with another one in your home to see if the problem persists. If the replaced light functions well, then you may simply need to purchase a new light bulb for the fixture. However, if the other light flickers too, then you may be dealing with a more complex wiring problem that needs the expertise of a professional electrician.

3. Check For Signs Of Corrosion

Corrosion along walls where wires run through or around the main electrical panel can indicate a wiring issue that is causing lights to fluctuate in your home. If wires start to corrode and burn internally, then you will start to notice a little charring on your walls or around the main panel. If nothing else is the issue, then pay close attention to these areas as you may need to inform your electrician ahead of time so that he or she can come equipped with the right tools for the job. This may be the problem if your wires are older, and may need replacing.

Follow these steps when you notice lights flickering in your home. For more information, contact your local electrical repairs service.

I am not an electrical contractor, but after a couple of power failures, I have learnt an awful lot from the professional contractors who came out to repair the wiring and fuses in my home. I hope this blog will help you to keep the lights on in your property.
